See Something, Say Something

The news has stories this week about security at large 4th of July events. The thought is that Islamic terrorists could target such events in order to make a statement.

True to our “American” bravado were police officials describing how security would be upgraded and encouraging citizens not to be paralyzed by the threat. One official encouraged all to celebrate freedom but to also be alert.

“If you see something, say something.”

I was struck by the simplicity of that advice. It is the essence of courageous communication. Be alert. Communicate when you see something that could have a negative impact on the team. Don’t expect someone else to do it. Be accountable.

Lots of unfortunate things happen when folks don’t say things when they see things.

“If you see something, say something” is a good policy. Use it to help assure a safe 4th. Bring it to work too.
