The Power of 6S: Transforming Operations and Raising Standards

I’ve seen tremendous progress in our operations since we began implementing β€œlean” techniques, particularly through 6S. The six principles are:

– Sort
– Straighten
– Shine
– Standardize
– Sustain
– Safety

Initially, getting it right requires effort. Documenting methods, forming habits, and maintaining consistency takes time. But the benefits are undeniable.

1. Satisfaction: The team takes pride in accomplishing the task.
2. Confidence: It builds momentum, inspiring larger lean efforts.
3. Efficiency: Streamlined operations and a safer work environment improve productivity.
4. Respect: It elevates regard for the work and the workplace. People may not articulate it, but they feel it.

Here’s why it works: the β€œbroken windows theory.”

Years ago, when Rudy Giuliani became mayor of New York City, the crime rate was staggering, and people were afraid to visit. Two sociologists, James Wilson and George Kelling, studied the connection between physical environment and behavior.

Their research suggested that neglecting an areaβ€”like leaving windows broken or walls covered in graffitiβ€”led to a disregard for laws and increased crime. They recommended focusing on fixing windows and cleaning up graffiti to signal that someone cared about those spaces.

Giuliani embraced the idea. High-crime areas were cleaned and maintained. The result? Crime rates dropped. The improved environment reduced lawlessness by showing that the community valued those areas.

For us, 6S works in a similar way. It’s not just about efficiencyβ€”it’s about signaling care and respect for our facilities, our work, and each other. Maintaining our spaces reflects pride, fosters safety, and encourages everyone to aim higher.
