Contentment vs. Satisfaction – Understanding the Difference

β€œI was contented, but not satisfied. I have always been contented, but I have never been satisfied. To be dissatisfied means that you are ambitious to advance, to do things, not that you may be richer, but that you may be useful and take a part in the work of the world.” – Henry Flagler

Flagler was a businessman who did much to develop Florida.Β

I like the distinction he makes between contentment and satisfaction.Β

You can be content when you give great effort. Contentment is a measure of your contribution. You can be contentΒ withΒ the role you’ve been given and the way you fulfill it.Β

You can be contentΒ withΒ the deeds you sow and the resources you have. Contented people are able to be grateful and express gratitude.Β

But it seems that Flagler associates satisfactionΒ withΒ being finished and being able to rest on accomplishmentβ€”withΒ having your stomach filled and your thirst quenched. But he knew satisfactionΒ would notΒ last. The thrill of victory soon passes, and the desire for purpose and intention returns.Β

If you’re here, there’s something more for you to contribute. Happen to the world–every day.Β
