I was visiting with a colleague today who told me about some consulting work he had been doing. He came across a firm that studies how ideas are developed and used within an organization. One thing he shared that I have found to be true: the best ideas have nothing to do with a person’s role or position in the group.

When we encounter a problem or opportunity, we have vast experience that can help us find the best solution. But too often, the people with the best possible solutions may not speak up because they don’t think it’s their place or responsibility. As a result, the people in positions of power feel compelled to act, even if it’s not the best course.

It is misguided to think that the formal leader, whether a manager or executive, will automatically have the best idea. Many of you have forgotten more about the machinery you use daily than I will ever know. Why should I be trusted when machines are being discussed?

Therefore, if I am the leader, it is my job to find the best idea, not necessarily have the best idea.

So no matter who you are, speak up when you have a good idea or solution. And if you are the leader, make sure everyone is heard. It might just improve our situation.
