Leaders Are Readers

I’ve heard it said that “leaders are readers.”

If that is the case, these recent statistics provided by the Jenkins Group about reading would explain any leadership shortage that we have in this country.

Check this out:

33% of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.

42% of college graduates never read another book after college.

80% of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.

Wow!

I love to read. One of the things that keeps me reading is the motivation to keep fresh stuff in front of you as I write these notes. Another thing that keeps me going on it is that reading keeps fresh ideas coming. You may not always know it but to the extent it’s my job to keep us moving ahead and seeking new ways to approach things in this rapidly changing world, it wouldn’t happen if I wasn’t a reader.

Where do you fall amongst these statistics? Have you picked up a good book lately?

We have a lot of media opportunities out there. I think most people defer to television which is the easiest media to acquire as compared to reading quality books, magazines or newspapers. It also stunts your ability to lead.

Think about how you arrange your life on improving what you know. I am suggesting you add reading to the mix.
