Those on your team need to know they have a say. They need to know they can ask questions, make suggestions, and propose ideas. And when they do, they need to be confident they will be heard and respected.
Second, you have to be predictable, minimize drama, and make the problem the task. If the team doesn’t know how the leader will respond, they will hold back.
Finally, you need to have a record of “fairness.” There are no favorites. The best ideas win. Penalties and rewards are allocated appropriately.
Legitimate leaders are open. They are predictable. They are fair.
