Lessons from March Madness

March Madness is done. The top seed Kentucky wins.

Ken Delle Donne, the general manager of our treating operations, won the pool. Congratulations Ken.

In the aftermath, I listened to the comments made by the players and coaches. Under the leadership of coach John Calipari, Kentucky has been known to sign the top-ranked recruits, see them play one year, then forego the balance of their college eligibility to go professional. The “rap” on that approach is that the team is high on talent and low on maturity and teamwork. Calipari said the success was all about the team:

“This is a lesson. When you share, trust each other, respect each other, sacrifice for your teammates. Truly play for your teammates. If you do those things, you will be successful. If you don’t do those things, you won’t.”

Calipari has been to this tournament with the most talented players before. This time he went with the best “team.” Teams trump talent. That’s what I learned.
