You may have seen this. It came from a safety minute generated by Sunbelt’s HR leader:
“LUCK : How many times in the past – both on the job and at home – have you said to yourself, “Wow, that was a close one?”
No matter the department you work in, production, maintenance, treating or in the office, accidents can happen. That’s why we all need to be reminded from time to time to keep safety first.
We are committed to preventing accidents through safe work practices and safety education, not luck.
Think safety in everything you do.”
Great safety point! Stands alone by itself.
My thoughts went a little bit further.
On the occasions I say: “Wow! That was a close one!” , I have to admit it was because I was doing something I shouldn’t be doing or not doing something I should have been doing.
I was taking a short cut. I wasn’t paying attention. I was too lazy to gather the tools I needed to complete a task. You get the point.
I would add this note. Not only do we not count on luck, we make our own luck.
As Chris Stapleton says in his country song: “I know right where I went wrong” is a refrain most of us can sing when bad things happen.
