“HAPPENING TO THE WORLD” IS A MINDSET

“There are two kinds of people: those who believe they make things happen and those who believe things happen to them.” – Travis Bradberry, Forbes

Sound familiar?

Bradberry cites a study by Dr. Tim Judge at the University of Florida stating that those who “happen to the world” sell more, serve customers better, adjust faster to change, and get paid more.

Particularly distinctive is how “happening to the world” people respond to complex, challenging times. They don’t falter and hesitate. They redouble their efforts. They manage their tension and anxiety well.

Here are some thought processes to consider when confronting difficult times:

  • Expect change. Don’t be daunted by it. If the situation is fluid, you must be open to trying new things.
  • Focus on what you can do. Some get immobilized by the barriers. Remember, you can always do something to improve things. Keep your eyes on what you cando.
  • Eliminate negative self-talk. The situation isn’t permanent. It’s probably not as big as you imagine. You can get things to a better place. That’s the voice you need to hear in your head.
  • Have an attitude of gratitude. You have tools. Teammates. Skills. You’ve used them before. They won’t fail you now. Appreciate them.

“Happening to the world” is a mindset. You believe it. You can achieve it.
